EDGAR’S OASIS TOUR DIARY PART TWO
MONDAY 16TH MARCH 2009 (early Feb contd)
yes indeedee there were many miles and roads separating us from show to show but harry h bomb verth got us from town to town at godspeed including the first killer drive from Barcelona to Lisbon, but this was our first chance to go to our first aftershow in Barcelona. My old pal and boss the modfuhrer Sir Paul Weller was in attendance that eve and was in fine fettle and was most complementary towards the lads’ playing especially young Nick with whom he spent every available moment encouraging him to grow his hair in a big afro. Had an interesting conversation with Noel about the latest installments in the curious tales of Lee Mavers and of other more fast moving recent musical phenomena such as the JIm Jones Revue and the recent psych compilation by the androgenous amorphic whatchamacallits.
It as a nice calm atmosphere in the room we were in, mostly discussing musical this and thats with the guys from Oasis, whom in real life are not so much a big band as a small gentleman’s society. Good guys with good taste that is. There was occasional hollering coming from a room adjacent of which I’m not completely sure as I’m no expert on this but I think it may have been a Woking accent. Didn’t stay too late as we had a little bit of driving to do next day. 16 hours to be exact.
Waking up in Lisbon next morning was a tonic. It was well Gulliver’s travels and a glorious day to boot. Got the soul ready to play again. gig went well again. Unfortunately it was early night again as next day was an 18 hour drive.
All became a bit more of the same from this point. There were good things to note, like the sound in purpose-built arenas in France and food in Italy but because of the extreme distances and tight schedule involved it became mostly about getting the job done - which we did - and its worth noting that our kind benefactors were sidestage every night to watch the show, which was decent and very encouraging of them.
Arriving in Vienna for our final show (26th Feb) where was a bit of a kerfuddle as someone had graffitied “FREE PEACE! NICE ONE! MCFC!“ on the wall. Wonder who it could have been. Might have been that geezer who I gained a lot of respect for on the tour as he drove his tonsils to breaking point singing every single night. A man after my own heart in this respect. NICE ONE!!!
Since we got back we’ve had a week of overdubbing the l.p. followed by a week of rehearsal to ready us for our first London show at Blow Up. Much thanko to mr Paul Tunkin for believing in us at this early stage - and for those who missed it, it was mr kipling quality, ha, ha, ha. thanks to those who attendend. Bit knackered still from weekend so will leave you there for now. See you in a week or so with news and maybe some announcement or other….........
